Celebs, Pros Team to Help Kick-off Rocket Mortgage Classic

DETROIT, Michigan (June 25, 2019) ~ Big names from the worlds of both entertainment and sports converged Tuesday at The Detroit Athletic Club for the 313 Challenge, a celebrity golf scramble that kicked off the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Participants were divided into three teams, each led by a PGA pro.

Team Fowler was led by five-time PGA Tour winner, Rickie Fowler, and included musician Kid Rock, Detroit Red Wings player, Justin Abdelkader, and Golf Channel host, Blair O’Neal.

Team Dustin featured 20-time PGA Tour winner, Dustin Johnson, NFL Hall of Fame member, Jerome Bettis, Detroit Red Wings player, Dylan Larkin, and social media sensation, Paige Spiranac.

Team Bubba was comprised of two-time Masters champ and 12-time PGA Tour winner, Bubba Watson, alongside Michigan State University basketball coach, Tom Izzo, Red Wings goaltender, Jimmy Howard, and World Long Drive competitor, Troy Mullins.

The challenge was to end up with a score of 3-1-3 (chosen because of Detroit’s famed area code). This meant scoring an eagle on the par-five 14th hole, a hole-in-one on the par-three 15th hole, and a birdie three on the par-four 16th hole. Though no celebrity team met this challenge exactly, Johnson’s team came the closest, taking the day’s title for Dustin, Jerome, Dylan, and Paige.

Though the celebrity bout is over, the 313 Challenge will continue. Should any PGA player during the tournament score 3-1-3 successively on holes 14 through 16, that player will receive $313,000 for the charitable organization of their choice, among others.
