Parking Deal Has Limits

The Detroit City Council has a public hearing scheduled for today on a plan to cut Detroit’s parking ticket fines in half– that would only apply to city residents.

It would cut the current 45-dollar fee by half, if the ticket is paid with five days.

The plan would not cover those who simply work in the city.

They say you can’t treat residents and non-residents differently on public streets.

Opponents say the city is always trying to attract visitors to the city an that this would send those visitors the wrong message.

City officials say the proposal aims at improving the collection of fines and giving a break to residents of a city that has a poverty rate of about 40-percent.
