MSP Raids Macomb Prosecutor’s Office

Michigan State Police have raided the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office in Mt. Clemens.

MSP confirmed the Special Investigations Unit executed a search warrant in connection with the state police investigation into forfeiture funds handled by the prosecutor.

The investigation was opened a few weeks ago at the request of Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel.
They’re calling it a criminal investigation.
Hackel said that more than 1-million dollars in funds were mishandled.
Hackel said that much of the money was spent directly by Smith’s office and did not go through the county board or other proper channels.
The office of prosecutor Eric Smith says in a statement;

“Macomb County’s Office of Corporation Counsel was informed today that the Michigan State Police, First District Special Investigation Section, has opened a criminal investigation into the Macomb County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office use of forfeiture funds. As a result, no further comments will be made by Macomb County. Any questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the State of Michigan Attorney General’s Office. Macomb County will cooperate fully with the investigation.”
