Truck Startup Gets Big Investor Cash

A Plymouth company is getting a big infusion of cash to help build electric pickup trucks.

Amazon will join in the funding of Rivian, based in Plymouth, which plans to make an all-electric pickup next year.
Rivian says it’s getting a 700-million dollar investment from Amazon, which is joining a previous investor, Abdul Jameel, an auto distributor in Saudi Arabia.

GM was also in talks to invest in Rivian, but is not part of this round of investments.

At the Automotive News World Congress, Rivian founder R-J Scaringe characterized the kind of vehicle Rivian wants to make: 0 to 60 in 3 seconds, off-road capability, family-friendly, and using a ‘skateboard’ type chassis.

Rivian will produce the pickups at the old Mitsubishi plant in Normal, Illinois.
