Medal Of Honor Recipient Charles Kettles Dies

Charles Kettles of Ypsilanti flew his Huey helicopter into heavy enemy fire to help rescue more than 40 soldiers trapped in combat in Vietnam in 1967.
Kettles and 4 other chopper crews managed to get 36 of the 44 stranded men safely out of the zone. But enemy fire kept the pilots from getting to the last 8.
Without any support, Kettles flew back into the combat zone.

His helicopter was shattered by machine gun and mortar fire. But Kettles set down in the midst of the barrage and the 8 men were rescued.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2016.
Army Lt. Col. Charles Kettles has died. He was 89.
