Michigan Pushes For P-FAS Cleanup

P-FAS cleanup legislation sponsored by members of the Michigan congressional delegation would make the chemical sites eligible for federal cleanup funding.

Bills would create federal EPA Superfund cleanup sites for P-FAS… an acronym for per and poly-fluorinated chemicals tied to many health concerns.
More than 30 sites of P-FAS contamination have been declared in Michigan, one of the first states to make P-FAS an issue. Among the biggest— the former GM Buick City site, the closed-down Wurtsmith Air Base, and manufacturing sites around the state.
There is no federal drinking water standard, nor is there a federal cleanup standard, leaving states to go in their own direction.
The new legislation would give the federal EPA direction on P-FAS cleanup, and provide the first step toward federal funding. 16 wastewater treatment plants in the state have high enough levels of the contaminants flowing into waters from businesses that they face increased scrutiny.
