School Panel Near Action On Social Studies

A new task force formed by the State Department of Education to study proposed changes in social studies is to hold its last meeting of the year tomorrow.

The committee is reviewing thousands of suggestions on proposed revisions to Michigan’s social studies standards.

It would then author a draft for the state board of education to consider.

The social studies standards set the bar for what students are expected to learn by the end of each grade.

Problem arose this spring with calls for several controversial revisions in the standards.

State education officials then held several public comment sessions across the state to gather reaction to the revisions.
