Court Hears Challenge To Law On First Time Voters

Federal Court Judge Robert Cleland is to hold a hearing today in Port Huron on a major challenge to Michigan election law.

At issue before the judge is whether it’s unconstitutional to require young voters to vote in person in their first election if they registered by mail.
That’s the law in Michigan.

Lawyers for college democrats say the restriction prevents students who may live hours from their homes from voting in their college towns and even discourages then from trying to take part in the voting process.

The lawsuit challenging the law wasn’t filed until August 30th.

The judge was reluctant to issue a ruling so close to the election, but after getting attorneys to narrow key issues in the dispute, said he might now be willing to do so.

He said simply that he would make a decision as expeditiously as possible.
