McPhail In Court On School Flap

Former Detroit city councilwoman Sharon McPhail is due in Wayne County Circuit Court today.

McPhail has been embroiled in an ongoing controversy involving the running of the Detroit Community Schools, a charter school that was founded in 1997.

A temporary restraining order issue was issued last week on a request that she be stopped from managing the business operations of the school.

McPhail was fired after refusing for three years to obtain a state certificate to be superintendent of the school, but she refused to leave.

In 2016 the Michigan Department of Education ruled the charter school’s chief administrative officer, McPhail, was not properly certified and ordered it to comply with the law.

The school was fined more that 200-thousand dollars as it appealed that ruling.

The school had enough and went to court last week to force McPhail out.

McPhail is due in court today to argue why the restraining order should be dismissed.
