Detroit Tries To Help Evicted Residents

The city of Detroit is looking to use thousands of dollars in emergency funds to help tenants of a downtown hotel who have been told they have 30 days in which to vacate the premises.
The eviction notices were given to residents of the Park Avenue House, a hotel which in the past has catered to low-income, long-term guests.

It had been described as one of the few limited affordable housing options left in the city.

A spokesman for the mayor said landlords looking to find higher-paying residents, still must treat their current tenants with respect.

A request to provide 350-thousand dollars in emergency funds to the United Community Housing Coalition will go before the city council at today’s meeting.

The coalition, a non-profit that works on housing issues, would use the money to help those being asked to move to find new, affordable housing.
