Court Case Back On For Shooting By Ex-State Senator

The complicated case involving former state senator Virgil Smith III is back on the front burner.

The case involves a 2016 plea deal Smith had entered into involving an incident with his ex-wife.

Under that plea deal, Smith was prohibited from seeking election to any office during a five year probationary period.

But the Michigan Supreme Court ruled this year that he cannot be barred from running for office.

At the same time, a majority of the justices ruled that a Wayne County Circuit Court Judge erred when he struck down that portion of the plea deal without first allowing the prosecutors office to withdraw the original plea deal.

The high court ruling means Smith could face additional punishment for shooting up his ex-wife’s car in 2015.

A post conviction status conference has been scheduled for today to review the matter.
