A jury trial is scheduled for today for a Sumpter Township couple charged in the brutal death of the woman’s 4-year-old daughter.
24 year old Candice Diaz and 28 year old Brad Fields have been charged in the New Year’s day death of Gabrielle Barrett.
She died from multiple traumatic injuries, including burns all over her body.
Officials called it one of the worst cases of child abuse they had ever seen.
The couple had fled the state after the girls body was found, but were spotted in Georgia on January 9th and arrested and brought back to Michigan.
Diaz told officers the little girl burned herself when she ran her own bath water, but admitted she did not seek medial help for her daughter.
Court records indicate Diaz and Fields both were dealing with mental problems such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
