Transit Plans Are Here: It Just Takes Money

Property owners will be asked to pay an average of $95 a year for a regional mass transit system that would include a commuter rail line, a network of rapid buses and service to Detroit Metro Airport.

The tax will appear on the November ballot. The proposal requires a majority of the combined vote in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties.

A key part would be a rail line connecting downtown Ann Arbor and downtown Detroit, There also would be bus rapid transit — dedicated lanes, stations, traffic signal coordination — from downtown Detroit to Pontiac, M-59 and Detroit Metro Airport to Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.

A regional transit authority will present more details today in Southfield and at the Mackinac Policy Conference, which starts today.
